2019 Cabernet Sauvignon

Another new wine from 2018 is the Massa Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This is an amazing vineyard with a great history set in Carmel Valley. Working with this site is a special treat for us as Megan grew up in Carmel Valley. This small wine region is set in the east-west valley that runs from the cold, foggy Carmel-By-the Sea to the warm, dry Arroyo Seco. The valley is a geological mash up of schist, granite, sandstone, and calcareous soils. The Massa Vineyard was previously known as Durney Vineyard. The Cabernet is own-rooted in sandy granitic residual soils and planted in 1971! The wines produced in the 1970s are still drinking beautifully today. The vineyard has been farmed organically since the beginning.

Vinification

The grapes were picked in mid-october. They were destemmed and fermented with no additions, and aged for 18 months in neutral oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

This cabernet is bright and full of energy. It is aromatically driven and puts on full display the beautiful minerality that this variety shows without the sheen of excessive ripeness or new oak. The wine displays aromatics of juicy red currant and exotic earthy spices of curry leaf, and carob powder. The bright acidity in the mouth unfolds into a lovely broad texture. This wine already tastes fully formed and delicious but will age extremely well.
